Markmaker: KIN Sound System
Indie Rock. Caribbean Vibes.
That is KIN Sound System. Known for their rhythm-driven songs with lush harmonies and an explosive delivery, KIN Sound System embodies an Indie Rock fusion sound that could only be birthed in the eclectic Caribbean. Founded by lead guitarist and singer Kiwan Landreth-Smith, and inspired by the sounds of local rock bands like Orange Sky, the KIN Sound System has been together since 2009 through successful incarnations. In 2013, the band’s lead vocalist, Kiwan, was diagnosed with throat cancer. The operation put him in remission, but the price he paid for his life… was his voice. For two years thereafter, it was believed that the days of KIN were over. But Kiwan never felt the fire die within him. KIN Sound System had its first gig after Kiwan won his battle against cancer in 2017. The lessons learned on this exquisitely painful journey seem to bring out their evolved genre. The reception to the music was enough to reinforce that KIN was not only back, they were even better. KIN has since wrote seven songs from the very soul of their journey, unrestrained and honest, hued in both darkness and light-heartedness. Their album is due for release in 2019, but you can find two of its singles, called Oceans and Oh No, on SoundCloud now. |
